Feb. 2026: Use Case 4 Meeting – Data Integration with Digital Twins
The recent working meeting focused on the fundamentals of the Asset Administration Shell and the current scope of information provided by digital twins. The added value of future services such as ECLASS was also discussed. Two specific use cases demonstrated how information from digital twins can support websites and points of sale in the future. During the working sessions, retailers, system providers, and other stakeholders analyzed the information requirements and confirmed the relevance of the selected stakeholder constellation for successful implementation.
Jan. 26: Use Case 3 Meeting – Manufacturer BOM: Components and Structures Finalized
The working session on the Manufacturer BOM use case began with an overview of the Furniture-X Governance Circle and the Asset Administration Shell. This was supplemented by an overview of various types of bills of materials and their relevance to Furniture-X. Among other things, it became clear which types of BOMs need to be mapped and how they relate to other Furniture-X use cases. Subsequently, the participants identified all supplied components based on specific pieces of furniture. The suppliers assigned their components, thereby laying the groundwork for an initial technical representation as a proof of concept using digital twins.
Jan. 26: Use Case 2 Meeting – Complaints and Repairs
At the most recent meeting of the Complaints and Repairs use case, participants examined the complaints and repairs process. Representatives from the furniture retail sector, industry associations, standardization bodies, and software providers reviewed the individual process steps for all stakeholders involved. They identified which data is already available today, where it is generated, and how it must or can be shared in a structured manner in the future. The joint process map forms a central foundation for the subsequent end-to-end digitization of the information chain.
Jan. 26: Furniture-X Governance Meeting: Another Milestone on the Industry Initiative’s Shared Journey
Furniture-X reaches the next stage: Representatives of the initiative’s founders and the Expert Council met on Thursday, January 22, during imm cologne to discuss the next steps toward clarifying key governance issues. The focus of the meeting was deliberately not on finding immediate solutions to individual details, but rather on developing a shared understanding of how and within which circles topics such as governance, role models, and regulatory requirements affecting the future DPP should be addressed and structured under the umbrella of Furniture-X.
Dec. 2025 Interactive Year-End Status Update
With nearly 40 participants, the organizers and partner companies of the Furniture-X Initiative took part in an interactive online meeting on December 5, organized by Integrated Words, which included a comprehensive status update as well as several workshops. The goal of the event was to provide transparency regarding current and future Lighthouse projects, to delve deeper into key technical, strategic, and content-related issues, and thus to set the course for collaboration in 2026.
Oct. 2025: Furniture-X Expert Council meets in Cologne
The Furniture-X Expert Council met in Cologne to discuss key future issues facing the furniture industry. The focus was on governance and compliance in connection with the Digital Product Passport (DPP).
Outcomes of the meeting:
- Formation of working groups to develop common industry positions
- Goal: to present these positions in a coordinated manner to EU decision-makers
- Consensus on the importance of data quality, automation, and cooperation for the successful implementation of the DPP
Oct. 2025: Furniture-X Update Event – Practical Implementation of the Benefits Offered by the Digital Twin and the DPP
On October 6, it was time once again: The initiative, founded in 2024, provided an update on progress in integrating the digital twin into existing business processes and software systems, as well as its future integration into new, circular business models. From the initiators’ perspective, nothing less than what may be the industry’s last major opportunity to accelerate digital transformation is at stake.
Furniture-X Lighthouse Projects — Taking the Next Step Through Practical Implementation.
With the launch of the Furniture-X initiative in February 2024 and its focus on implementing the digital product passport, new momentum is being generated for the circular economy in the furniture industry. The initiative’s primary goal is to strengthen the SME-dominated industry and prepare for regulatory requirements while focusing on solutions suitable for SMEs. To this end, a data ecosystem is being established that integrates all relevant actors in the circular economy and forms a reliable foundation for trust and open collaboration. This creates added value for all actors in the circular economy.
The Lighthouse projects were launched to ensure sustainable added value for every stage of the circular economy and to guarantee the availability of relevant data and information. Each stage of the circular economy is represented by one or more experts.
May 2025: Live at Ligna and Interzum
At this year’s “interzum,” the world’s leading trade fair for furniture suppliers and interior design, the industry network “möbelfertigung” is curating the “Textile & Machinery” trend forum in Hall 10.1.
Furniture-X was present at two of the six thematic areas with case studies from Rolf Benz and Polipol, including corresponding screens, and provided information on standardization, competitive advantages, synergies, and challenges in implementing digital product passports.
Sixteen experts gathered in mid-January at the Cologne School of Furniture Design to take stock of the FURNITURE‑X initiative’s work to date and discuss the next steps for the current year. All participants agreed: just under a year after its launch, the initiative is fully on track.
FURNITURE-X reached its first milestone as early as November 2024, when the showcases from the Polipol Group and Nolte Küchen were presented at the IWOfurn Summit. Furthermore, a fully functional data room was presented for future collaborative work along the value chain and for the circular economy. The focus now is on deriving the first benefits from the digital twins through the rollout of the first pilot projects and creating added value for the industry players involved. Industry standards are to be derived from this later, which will be indispensable for a broad rollout.
Scan the QR code to see all the key details at a glance—Polipol and nolte Küchen have already set out to make this vision a reality and have equipped their first pieces of furniture with a digital twin. At the IWOfurn Summit 2024, the showcases—an armchair by Polipol and a kitchen unit by nolte featuring built-in electronics—made their debut.
February 29, 2024 – Inaugural meeting of FURNITURE‑X
FURNITURE‑X – The Digital Product Passport is now moving forward.
Things are gaining momentum in the circular economy. On February 29, 2024, the inaugural meeting of FURNITURE‑X took place in Cologne. This is the name of the new consortium that is advocating for a practical and widespread introduction of the Digital Product Passport in the furniture industry.
The starting point is clear: On December 22, 2023, the EU member states launched the new Ecodesign Regulation, which aims to ensure that only energy-efficient products enter the single market in the future—products that have been manufactured in a resource-efficient manner and are durable and repairable. The furniture industry will be among the first sectors to be legally required to implement the Digital Product Passport. The complexity along the furniture value chain increases the (time) pressure on this issue, which is to be implemented by 2030: Products come in an extremely wide variety, and the standardization of product data content is (still) minimal.
The leading industry organizations in the field of data management are collaborating with Furniture X from the outset to manage the complex rollout of the initiative in the furniture industry by 2030: the Association of the German Furniture Industry (VDM), the Data Competence Center (DCC) as the standardization body for data exchange formats and processes, the Furniture and Kitchen Trade Association (BVDM), the SME Association (ZGV), Morphe as the driving force behind the establishment of ECLASS standards in the interior design industry, and Integrated Worlds as the operator of the central data exchange platform IWOfurn.
